La photographie à l'épreuve (The proof in photography)

Photography in the context of modern and contemporary art
The Collections of the Iac–FRAC Rhône-Alpes and the Musée d'Art Moderne de Saint-Étienne Métropole

Between February and May 2005, the Institut d'art contemporain, Villeurbanne, and the Musée d'Art Moderne, Saint-Étienne Métropole , in partnership, are presenting almost their entire collections of photographs (11 February – 22 May at the Iac; 10 February – 10 April at the Musée d'Art Moderne).

These two concurrent exhibitions, will provide a fresh new viewpoint on the major components of two important collections of photographs in the Rhône-Alpes region. The quality of these collections is not particularly well known to the general public, and even the professionals have only a limited acquaintance with them, gleaned from exhibitions in France and abroad, and in associated publications.

This novel initiative will be accompanied by a book, and the catalogues of both collections will be made available on line. The inventory data will be complemented by a CD-ROM with texts on each photographer and each individual image.

The Iac–FRAC Rhône-Alpes collection includes work by 194 artists. Out of a total of 615 photographs, 425 were acquired by Jean-François Chevrier, and these are kept at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Saint-Etienne. The MAM collection itself comprises 1,752 photographs by 121 artists.

Each of the two exhibitions will be developing a particular viewpoint: Martine Dancer, the exhibition curator at the Musée d'Art Moderne, will be presenting photography as an artistic discipline in its own right, but also the dynamics of distribution of the photographic print (in magazines, artists' books and portfolios), which has also contributed greatly to the fortunes of photography. Dirk Snauwaert, the exhibition curator at Iac, will be looking at the dialectic that was at the heart of the exhibition Another objectivity, namely the way in which, during the 1980s, photography reclaimed its own historical models and categories.

The artists include Blanc & Demilly, René-Jacques, Raoul Hausmann, Piet Zwart, Wols, Cas Oorthuys, Helen Levitt, Dominique Auerbacher, Gabriel Cuallado, Lee Friedlander, Chris Killip, Christian Milovanoff, Jan Saudek, Claude Batho, Tony Ray-Jones, William Eggleston, William Klein, August Sander, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Jeff Wall, Walker Evans and Larry Clark.
